Comparing Curriculums: Our Three Pre-University Pathways
Choosing the right academic pathway before university is one of the most important decisions a student, and their family, will make. At TEMS, we offer a distinctive and forward-thinking approach to education that acknowledges this choice is deeply personal.
That’s why our Pre-University students studying at our Nexus Navigator campus can follow one of three respected academic curriculums: A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), and the Spanish Bachillerato.
In this post, we’re comparing curriculums to help families understand which pathway might best suit their child’s strengths, ambitions, and learning style. Each programme is designed to prepare students not only for university but for a future that demands adaptability, global-mindedness, and a strong academic foundation.
A Levels: Specialisation with flexibility
Tried and tested in the UK and beyond, A Levels offer a deep dive into three or four chosen subjects. This route is ideal for students who already have a clear sense of where their academic interests lie. At TEMS, students choosing A Levels benefit from focused, in-depth study, which can be especially advantageous for those planning to pursue science, mathematics, or the humanities at top universities in the UK or other English-speaking countries.
Strengths:
- Specialised subject choice
- Highly respected by UK and Commonwealth universities
- Flexible for students with strong interests in specific fields
A Levels are a particularly good fit for students who already have a clear academic direction and are ready to explore a few subjects in depth. Those who enjoy independent learning and focused study will thrive in this structure, which allows them to build expertise in areas they are genuinely passionate about. It also provides a clear advantage for entry into competitive programmes, especially in countries like the UK.
IBDP: The global thinker’s choice
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is internationally recognised and highly respected by universities across Europe, North America, and beyond.
It’s designed for students who are academically driven and eager to engage with a broad, balanced curriculum that includes languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and the arts.
TEMS provides an enriched IBDP experience, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, research skills, and international-mindedness. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) component, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) project ensure students become well-rounded, reflective learners.
Strengths:
- Broad and balanced subject range
- Emphasises critical thinking, research, and global awareness
- Opens doors to top universities worldwide
The IBDP is best suited to students who are curious about the world, thrive on academic challenge, and value a well-rounded education. Those who enjoy balancing multiple interests and learning how to apply knowledge across different contexts will find the IB both engaging and rewarding.
It’s an excellent preparation for students aiming to apply to top global universities, particularly those that value breadth as well as depth in education and developing various skills on the IB journey.
Spanish Bachillerato: Rigour in the local context
For students aiming to study at Spanish universities or who are more rooted in the Spanish education system, the Spanish Bachillerato offers an excellent option. At TEMS, the Bachillerato programme maintains rigorous academic standards while also developing essential skills in analytical thinking, argumentation, and in-depth subject knowledge, typically across science, humanities, or arts tracks.
Students benefit from strong preparation for the EVAU (university entrance exam) and a curriculum that aligns seamlessly with Spanish higher education requirements.
Strengths:
- Aligns with Spanish university entrance exams
- Emphasises academic rigour and subject mastery
- Familiar format for students from Spanish backgrounds
This pathway is most appropriate for students who wish to pursue higher education within Spain or who feel most comfortable learning in Spanish within a more traditional academic framework.
It is particularly effective for those who enjoy structure, discipline, and a focused approach to mastering core academic subjects. Students on this path develop strong analytical skills and graduate with a deep understanding of their chosen track.
Comparing curriculums: Finding the right fit
When comparing curriculums at TEMS, it becomes clear that there is no one-size-fits-all. Each of our pathways has been carefully designed to cater to diverse student profiles.
Whether your child thrives in focused study, prefers a holistic academic experience, or seeks to stay aligned with the Spanish system, TEMS offers a pathway to match their aspirations.
Our experienced teachers, along with the Head of Sixth form and other members of the leadership team, work closely with families to guide students through this important decision. TEMS ensures that every student, regardless of the path they choose, leaves with key skills in time management, critical thinking, and communication, all of which are highly valued in higher education and beyond. These skills are developed outside of their curriculum too, through Enrichment session, volunteering opportunities, and more.
Why choose TEMS for Pre-University?
We recognise that every student is different as they start to think about life post-TEMs at university and beyond. Some are specialists who already know where their academic passions lie. Others are still exploring, keen to keep doors open and develop a wide range of skills. And some feel most comfortable staying connected to their local education system. That’s why offering these three distinct pathways matters so much.
What’s most important is finding the route that aligns with your child’s interests, learning style, and future goals. Whichever path they choose, they’ll be supported by experienced teachers and a school community that values both academic achievement and personal growth.
Choosing a pre-university pathway can feel daunting, but it’s also an exciting step. It’s a chance to think about what your child enjoys, how they learn best, and where they might want to go next.
