Skills for the future: how TEMS prepares students for a changing world
At TEMS, education is about more than preparing for exams — it’s about preparing for life. The world our students are growing into is changing rapidly, shaped by technology, globalisation, and creativity. To succeed in this landscape, young people will need more than academic knowledge. They’ll need curiosity, flexibility, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning.
That’s why at TEMS, every stage of education, from Pre-Nursery and Infants to Juniors and Seniors, is designed to build the skills for the future. Whether through the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), Explore Time, Enrichment Wednesdays, or the Music Academy, our students are constantly developing the qualities that will help them thrive in an ever-evolving world.
Critical thinking and problem-solving
The introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at TEMS marks a significant step towards future-focused learning. The IBDP encourages students to think critically, question deeply, and solve problems creatively — all essential skills in the 21st century.
Through Theory of Knowledge (TOK) discussions, extended essays, and interdisciplinary learning, students learn to connect ideas across subjects, analyse complex global issues, and reflect on how knowledge is built. They are not just learning what to think, but how to think, a hallmark of true lifelong learning.
This spirit of inquiry flows through the whole school, inspiring even our younger students to approach learning with curiosity and confidence.
Exploring beyond the curriculum
Education should stretch beyond traditional subjects. That’s why both our Junior and Senior students take part in Explore Time — mixed-age group sessions where they investigate topics outside the usual curriculum.
During this time, students have created house logos, mottos, and events, taken the initiative to lead projects, and explored new areas of interest from sustainability to design. Working across year groups fosters collaboration, leadership, and empathy — key interpersonal skills for life beyond the classroom.
By giving students ownership of their learning, Explore Time nurtures responsibility and creativity while showing that learning is not confined to a classroom or a textbook.
Learning through Enrichment Wednesdays
In Seniors, Enrichment Wednesdays offer students a unique opportunity to discover their passions and develop diverse skills. Each Wednesday afternoon, students choose from a wide range of activities — from Drama Club and Art Club, to Journalism, First Aid, Jewellery Making, Young Enterprise, and Table Tennis.
These sessions go beyond academic achievement; they help students develop confidence, teamwork, leadership, and adaptability. A student leading a Young Enterprise project learns about entrepreneurship, collaboration, and financial literacy. Another student in Drama Club develops self-expression, communication skills, and empathy. Every choice supports the development of the versatile, well-rounded individuals our world needs.
Creativity and expression through music and the arts
Creativity is at the heart of the TEMS experience. Our Music Academy offers students the chance to learn instruments, perform, and pursue their musical interests to a high standard. Whether playing piano, guitar or drums, students gain discipline, focus, and the joy of artistic expression.
The Junior Choir provides another avenue for teamwork and confidence building. Singing together teaches more than rhythm and harmony — it builds community, cooperation, and resilience. Through performances at the Summer Fair or the Year 13 Graduation Ceremony, our students learn the value of perseverance, practice, and shared achievement.
Art, music, and performance are not “extras” at TEMS. They’re essential tools for developing imagination, emotional intelligence, and self-belief.
Collaboration, communication, and global citizenship
From the youngest years in Voyager House and Discovery House to the IBDP, Bachillerato and A Levels in Nexus, collaboration is woven into daily learning. Students work together on projects, discuss ideas openly, and learn to listen respectfully to others. These experiences build communication skills, empathy, and leadership — qualities and skills for the future that will be essential in a global society.
Our diverse, international community also provides a natural environment for global awareness. Students are encouraged to appreciate different cultures, perspectives, and values, preparing them to become compassionate, responsible global citizens who can thrive anywhere in the world.
Adaptability and lifelong learning
The future will demand resilience and adaptability, qualities that TEMS students begin developing from the moment they join the school. Whether mastering a musical instrument, starting a business through Young Enterprise, or tackling an Extended Essay, our students learn to embrace challenges, reflect on feedback, and grow from experience.
We want every student to leave TEMS with a love of learning that lasts a lifetime, ready to face the unknown with confidence and creativity.
Building the foundation for tomorrow
We are proud to nurture not only academic excellence but also the personal and practical skills for the future that will help our students make a positive impact. The world is changing — but with the right skills, mindset and spirit, our students won’t just keep up with it. They’ll help shape it.
