Welcome to TEMS

We are a vibrant British private school in Madrid, offering a holistic, internationally minded education for students aged 1 o 18.

At The English Montessori School, we are proud to introduce the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) starting in September 2025. This globally respected qualification empowers students with critical thinking skills, intercultural understanding, and academic depth—preparing them for success at top universities and beyond.

The IBDP aligns perfectly with our values: curiosity, independence, and a passion for learning. By offering this prestigious programme, we continue to guide our students on a personalised journey toward their full potential in an ever-changing world.

How does the IBDP work?

Under the IB Diploma Programme, students choose six subjects—three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL)—with core areas like Mathematics required. HL choices are especially important for university applications.

Beyond these subjects, all IB students complete the Core:
• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Critical thinking about how we acquire knowledge
• Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Experiences beyond the classroom
• Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research project

The IBDP offers a balanced, challenging education that supports academic success, personal growth, and global awareness.

What is the IBDP Core?

The IB Core is a vital part of the Diploma Programme, made up of three components that support both academic and personal growth:

• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Encourages critical thinking about how knowledge is formed and understood.
• Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Promotes well-being and social responsibility through experiences beyond the classroom.
• Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word research project that develops key academic and writing skills.

Together, these elements help students become thoughtful, well-rounded, and globally minded individuals.

University preparation

The IBDP prepares students exceptionally well for university by fostering strong academic skills, intellectual curiosity, and independent learning. Its rigorous curriculum challenges students to think critically, manage their time effectively, and approach problems from multiple perspectives—skills that are highly valued in higher education.

Through the Extended Essay, students gain experience in conducting independent research and producing university-style academic writing, while Theory of Knowledge encourages analytical thinking and the ability to form well-reasoned arguments.
Additionally, the emphasis on balance, reflection, and global awareness—particularly through CAS—helps students develop the resilience, adaptability, and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in a diverse and demanding university environment.

``In the Sixth Form at TEMS, education is not just about grades; it’s about crafting futures, fostering excellence, and preparing students for a world where their potential knows no bounds.``
