Senior Department First Term 2011-12

Year 11 organised the annual White Christmas Party which was great fun with lots of crazy dancing (well done Ricardo, Claire and Matt!) and some lovely mathematical decorations. 8S invented the Come to School in a Hat Day after talking about it in their class assembly. I couldn’t believe how many pupils wore hats that day and how colourful and great everyone looked. Both classes raised lots of money for our sponsored children in Nicaragua. 30 euros was also raised from fines from lost locker keys and diaries. We made a total donation of 1700 euros.
We had mixed success in sport this half term. Our girls’Y12 &13 football team came third in the inter school competition which is excellent considering we had two Y7 pupils and one Y8 pupil on the team.
Year 8 were asked if they would like to go on a history and culture trip to Liverpool in March. 44 of them signed up immediately and the flights and hotel were booked the next day. A prize will be awarded for the person who does the best Scouse accent on their return (and especially if they can do it in front of the whole school in assembly!). Pupils also signed up for our annual ski trip. This year we are looking forward to going to Sierra Nevada.

Just a few days after half-term holidays, the Juniors had their Special Activity Day for the first term. The theme was “Taking Care of our Earth”, and the students spent the day learning about the importance of re-using, reducing and recycling. Some of the activities included painting newspapers to recycle them into wrapping paper, making posters for the classes and bathrooms to remind everyone to turn off lights and taps, making purses and wallets out of newspaper, and learning “The Three R’s” song. Everyone had a great day, and learned a lot about caring for the planet.
The Juniors also participated in two sports competitions this past half-term. On November 8, pupils from Year 4 on competed in a cross country meet against other British schools. The Juniors won first place in their category. Congratulations! On December 12, Year 6 and 7 boys came in fourth in a football competition. Well done to all the boys who participated!
On November 24, Year 5 went on an excursion to the Regional Archaeological Museum in Alcalá de Henares, where they learned about Pre-history as part of their Spanish Conocimiento del Medio topic.
Finally, this year the Juniors decided to sell Christmas greeting cards to raise funds for the Junior charity, Grupo 2013. The students made cards in class, and offered them for sale to parents. The response was fantastic, and we raised €311. Thanks to everyone who participated for your generosity!

The run up to Christmas was great fun in Infants.
Nursery were learning about ´Transport´ and went for a walk in the street with their teachers to learn about crossing the road and staying safe.
Reception also went for a walk to look at houses and homes in the local area. The children used ´junk material´ to make some fantastic houses.
Year 1 finished their Pirate topic with a visit to Casa de Campo´s Pirate ship and ´Pirate Day´. The children came to school dressed as pirates and took part in a treasure hunt, made money bags and treasure chests.
Year 2 have been learning about food and healthy eating. They enjoyed watching food change and rot over time and learnt all about a balanced meal.
We finished the terms hard work with a visit from Santa Claus and our carol concert where the different year groups took turns to perform the carols learnt in their music lessons with Eric.

Another school year has started and we have welcomed new pupils and some new teaching staff. I know that the existing pupils and staff are making them all feel as welcome as they can.
Once again we are very happy with the external exam results so congratulations to all the pupils who sat these exams and to all the teachers who taught them.
We want our pupils to enjoy learning as much as possible so lots of fun but meaningful activities have been planned.
In the extra curricular activities, Chinese has now been added for the Infant department, and last year’s pupils (Senior department) will be taking their first official Chinese exam at the end of this school year.
A fund raising raffle was held at the beginning of term by the Fabretto Foundation and 1700 Euros was raised which was the largest amount to be raised in one single day. A lot more fund raising will take place throughout the school year.
All the heads of department will now comment on the issues pertinent to their department.

Welcome to the school year 2011-2012.
We were joined by 3 new teachers who are proving to be great additions to the school. Matt took over in PE, Nicki is a part time maths specialist and Leticia teaches matematicas and ciencias sociales.
We hosted the boys’ cadete inter school basketball competition which was a great success even though we didn’t win! The girls’ infantil basketball team came 3rd in the competition when they played at Kensington School.
Years 7 and 8 had their Hallowe’en party –lots of creepy costumes, scary fun and too much chocolate and other rubbish to eat.
Years 10 and 11 went to The Bodies Exhibition which was an amazing insight into human anatomy with real human bodies for all to see. Some were whole, others split down the middle, one treated to show only the circulatory system…I’m not sure any of us ate the chicken drumsticks on our return though…

After the long summer holidays it was great to see the children return to school happy and excited to meet their new teachers and they quickly adapted to school life. Though starting school was a little daunting for some of our new children in nursery they have now all settled well and are busy learning lots of new things through their ´Under the Sea´ topic.
Reception have been learning all about the Jungle and visited the zoo to see the animals they have been learning about in class. The celebrated the end of their topic with ´Jungle Day´ when all the children, and teachers! came in animal fancy dress and looked fantastic!
Year 1 can tell you all about how to lead a healthy life and look after their bodies. We have followed recipes to make healthy fruit salads and wrote instructions for how to brush our teeth and wash our hands.
Year 2´s topic is ´Where we live´. They took a walk around the local area and have been learning how to follow maps and create them. They are looking forward to their visit to the planetarium. Star of the Week has begun and the children are enjoying being extra special and telling their friends all about their families, pets hobbies etc.
